Using your hosting package
Web Hosting
Our web hosting packages provide you with space on one of our servers to store the files which make up your web site, as well as email services and some bundled online software. To access this storage space you would normally use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), although there are a couple of alternative methods.
Uploading With FTP
When your hosting package is activated you will be sent a set of email, one of which contains your domain username and password. These details are used for FTP access to your website. If you have lost your password please follow the instructions for obtaining a password reminder.
There are hundreds of FTP programs available, but they all perform the same basic function, which is to move files from your computer to your web space on our server. In order to connect via FTP you will need your domain username and password, as well as the server hostname. For most of our packages this hostname will be ftp.<domain name> (e.g. ftp.example.com).
Once you have connected to the server you will need to place your files in the "documents" folder, and the main page for your site will need to be called "index.htm", "index.html", "index.php" or similar. For example if you place the file "products.html" in the documents folder on the server this will become visible at www.example.com/products.html.
Uploading With Frontpage
Microsoft's Frontpage web design program uses a different method to upload your site. Once you have finished writing your website first save all of the files, and then choose the "Publish Web" option from the file menu. You will be asked for the web address of your site, and then prompted for your username and password. Enter your domain username and password in these boxes and click ok. You site should then be automatically uploaded to the server.
Please note that not all of our packages support Frontpage.
Uploading With Filemanager
Most of our packages include the Gossamer Threads Filemanager system. To access this you can either click the link in the domain control panel or visit www.<domain name>/cgi-bin/filemanager/ (e.g. www.example.com/cgi-bin/filemanager/) and log in with your domain username and password.
This application provides you with the facility to upload, edit and delete files in your web space using a simple web interface. You can also use it to password protect folders in your web space. For more information please consult the Gossamer Threads documentation at http://www.gossamer-threads.com/.
