We have recently installed a state of the art Email Spam Scanning system, and we are now making this available to all of our hosting and email customers as an optional extra.
How much does it cost?
The cost depends on the web hosting or email mailboxes you have:
- Email Only (no web hosting) just £1.00 per month
- Bronze Web Hosting £1.00 per month
- Silver Web Hosting £2.00 per month
- Gold Web Hosting £3.00 per month
- Platinum Web Hosting £4.00 per month
(all prices are per year, and exclude VAT)
How does it work?
The system scans all email sent to addresses at your domain name then uses statistical and RBL methods to assign each message a score. Depending on the value of this score the system then either rejects the message immediately, tags it by adding [Spam?] to the subject line, or delivers the message as normal.
Why not block all of the messages?
Our system uses a complex set of rules to determine the nature of an email, but it is still possible for a legitimate message to be mis-classified as spam. Messages that score between the "tag" and "block" thresholds are fairly likely to be spam, but the occasional legitimate message may get caught. These messages are still delivered to your mailbox so that you can sort through them manually.
Do I need to make any changes to my email program?
Once you have signed up for the service you will notice an immediate reduction in the amount of obvious spam reaching your mailbox. You will still receive messages that score between the "tag" and "block" thresholds.
You can add a filter to your email program so that the messages tagged as potential spam are sorted into a separate folder on your computer, away from your main inbox. You can then check through this mailbox periodically to ensure that nothing has been mis-classified, and then delete all of the spam at once.
Does this mean I still have to download the spam?
By default yes, any messages that score between the two thresholds will still be downloaded to your computer when you check your mail.
Can I change the score thresholds to block all spam?
Yes. The default values are 5 to tag, and 12 to block. If you find that all of the tagged messages are spam, and no legitimate messages are being caught, then we can reduce the "block" threshold for you. Please enter a request as a support ticket through your control panel and we will adjust your settings.
